Prior Learning Credit

The Professional Certificate in Medical Coding serves as a valuable credential that complements your educational path, offering the potential to earn 4.5 academic credits for prior learning towards COH150: Health Care Terminology at National University.


Requirements to Enroll

All learners are eligible to enroll in the Medical Coding Professional Certificate. There are no admissions requirements. It is recommended that learners have a high school diploma or GED. It is also recommended that students without previous medical experience complete the program in its entirety.

Students are responsible for purchasing the following course text materials:

  1. A Short Course in Medical Terminology, 4th ed., Nath, Judi L., Wolters Kluwer  ISBN#9781496351470 (Paperback)
  2. The course material "bundle" used for the ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and Certification Review course is: Pro Fee Coder Bundle with AMA CPT Code Book. The certificate program content aligns with the 2023/24 versions of the bundle. Students may elect which bundle to purchase:
    • The 2023 "bundle" contains their ICD-10-CM 2023, AMA CPT Professional 2023, HCPCS Level II 2023 and CPT E/M Companion 2023 through AAPC.com OR
    • The 2024 "bundle" contains their ICD-10-CM 2024, AMA CPT Professional 2024 and HCPCS Level II 2024 Expert through AAPC.com

Estimated Time to Completion

The Medical Coding Professional Certificate can be completed in 53 hours, or in 3 months working approximately 20 hours per week, or in 6 months working 10 hours per week.


Access Time

Learners will have access to their certificate learning modules for up to 6 months from the date of their enrollment.
