Course Description

In the fourth course of the Certificate in Online Teaching, Introduction to Editing Sound and Video for use in Learning Objects, you will learn how to edit sound and video for use in learning objects to enhance the online learning environment.  Through this course, you can uncover how the use of media in an online classroom can flatten the learning curve and engage learners in the course. Explore the pros and cons of the use of audio and video and take away performance tips to build engaging multimodal courses.

The following questions will be addressed in this course. Please keep these questions in mind as you proceed.

  • Is media the best way to deliver this content? If so, why?
  • Do I have the resources (time, tech, skill) to create the media I am imagining? How can I get them?
  • How will the audience be viewing this media? On a mobile phone, PDA, Laptop, Desktop, etc.?
  • Am I the best person to host this video? You are the teacher, it does not mean that you are the subject matter expert or an amazing orator. If you have someone who would make a better host, consider using them.
  • Where will the media live? Will you be uploading and embedding it into an existing digital space, or will you need to first create the web page or virtual classroom? If you are linking the video from a public repository like YouTube or Vimeo will you curate (ensure that it is maintained) the repository (hosting site) for the life cycle of the video (sometimes we design learning environments and have others take them over)?
  • Ask yourself how these media will be experienced by your learning audience? Is it calibrated to their knowledge level, attention span, and emotional development?
