COT7005X - Adapting Traditional Classroom Management Strategies to Multimodal Spaces
Course Description
In the sixth course of the Certificate in Online Teaching, Adapting Traditional Classroom Management Strategies to Multimodal Spaces, you will learn how to transform your strategies for traditional classrooms to multimodal teaching. Understand the differences between online and traditional classrooms in the use of seat time, being mindful of standards and approaches to online and offline student learning. Clear communication, coupled with an understanding of the strengths and limitations of your institution’s Learning Management System (LMS), can allow you to enhance your existing classroom resources in order to creatively keep your students engaged. All the while, maintaining high levels of participation and skill retention.
Learn how to:
- Transform pedagogy to online format
- Use gamification, badges, and micro competencies in the multimodal environment
- Leverage mainstream software to enhance skill transferability
- Use media and memes to build engagement

- What are the best ways to clearly communicated expectations to the students to reduce or eliminate opportunities for misunderstanding in online or hybrid classes? (Including those related to:
- Assignment due dates
- Assignment instructions
- Readings
- Viewings
- Schedules for live online sessions
- Is there clear documentation for students, parents, teachers, and administration to support the teaching and learning expectations and can the stakeholders find them?
- Where are the documents or the information in the LMS?
- Can you deliver the documentation in other ways (email, weekly/daily announcements) to ensure accountability and make communication more robust?
- What are the best approaches to becoming comfortable working in the institution’s Learning Management System?
- What about testing how material will interface with the LMS?
- Is there a back-up plan if it fails?
- What is the protocol if the system crashes on the teacher and/or the students?
- In what ways are the teaching methods and resources diversified to communicate the lesson across different modes?
- Is content offered in both text and visual options?
- Are there efficient ways to balance multiple modes so that they are not overly taxing on teacher workflow
- What strategies have been adopted to engage technologically passive students?
- What are the plans to include and involve students who are physically (virtually) present but mentally checked out?
- What are the plans to involve the "lurkers" who prefer to remain behind the scenes and participate at the most minimal levels?

Requirements to Enroll
All learners are eligible to enroll in COT7005X: Adapting Traditional Classroom Management Strategies to Multimodal Spaces. There are no admissions requirements. It is recommended that learners have a high school diploma or GED. A teacher licensure credential is not required but recommended.
Estimated Time to Completion
This course will take approximately 10 hours of concentrated time on task to complete and it is recommended you complete a course each week during your program. Complete the units in the order presented for the best learning experience.
Access Time
