Course Description

There are many different aspects and definitions of the role of the teacher in the larger context of teaching and learning. Ultimately, the teacher acts as a guide, leading students through the curriculum, and facilitating a deeper understanding of the content and its real-world application. Effective teachers develop a curriculum that not only assesses the attainment of the agreed-upon standards but also incorporates measures throughout the learning that capture complex knowledge and skills.

This type of learning supports students as they develop their skills in:

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Design
  • Teamwork
  • Communication

To avoid the trap of merely assessing basic skills, it is critical to design assessment. Designing an assessment plan for your online learning environment helps your students understand what they need to know, how it connects to their prior learning, how it fits into the real world, and how they can develop their work to reach learning goals.

The following questions will be addressed in this module.

  • What is my role as an evaluator?
  • How do I design assessments for an online learning environment that conveys what students should know and provide students an opportunity to examine their understanding?
  • How are curriculum and assessment intertwined?
  • How do I capture complex knowledge and skills through assessments in an online course?
