Course Description

This course will cover historical models of cultural diversity including cultural competence models, cultural sensitivity, and cultural humility. It will also provide an introduction to the current trends in research and practice related to new approaches to diversity. This course maintains a systemic foundation and will describe a model of socio-cultural attunement and third order change informed by McDowell, Bermudez, & Knudson-Martin (2019). The course will be taught through engagement with reading and activities. Activities may include quizzes, case applications, and self-of-the-therapist reflections. This course may be valuable to you if you would like to revitalize the way your clinical practice attends to diverse socio-contextual experiences in your clients lives.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review historical models of approaching cultural diversity in therapeutic practice.
  2. Apply theory of intersectionality to clinical cases.
  3. Enhance skills of socio-cultural attunement.
  4. Develop understanding of third-order change and begin applying this to cases.
  5. Self-reflection on the person-of-the-therapist and socio-cultural experiences.
