Course Description

This course provides an overview of how to approach couples and families in which one member has been diagnosed with a severe illness. The course covers three theoretical frameworks that can be applied to conceptualization of clinical treatment. Additional factors such as culture and psychosocial implications are presented to equip participants with information for a social justice and cultural competence approach to working with this population. This course can benefit all mental health professionals, including Medical Social Workers and Medical Family Therapists. The time to complete this activity is approximately 3 hours.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the Bowen Family Therapy and Ecological Systems Theory.
  2. Demonstrate the use of the genogram to learn more about relational patterns within a family.
  3. Recognize how race, culture, and demographic factors can play a role in having a family member with a chronic or life-threatening illness.
  4. Examine considerations for working with various clinical configurations including couples, sibling groups, and family therapy.
  5. Identify trends and potential barriers to treatment for various groups.
