Course Description

Designed alongside two additional courses (A Safe and Supportive Learning Environment and Adult SEL and Well-being: Keys to the Learning Environment), this course explores the concept of social awareness; one of the five social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies defined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). As the third course in the recommended sequence on safe and supportive learning environments, the modules in this course focus on cultural diversity. However, any of the three courses can stand alone. Throughout this course, you will be encouraged to reflect on the influence of beliefs, values, and assumptions about culture and bias in educational settings. Like the two former courses in the series, this course offers foundational information adapted from three of National University’s graduate specializations; Social Emotional Learning, Trauma-Informed Education, and School Emergency and Safety Management. The resources available throughout this course will help you continue your self-directed learning on the topics presented. We hope you find the course thought-provoking, and we look forward to hearing your feedback!
