Course Description

The Academic Foundation I course will challenge you, but, at the same time, you will learn the academic skillsets for your journey as a successful scholar. Topics in this course include learning to take notes and formulate questions, brainstorming and organizing ideas, identifying the main and supporting ideas in a text, and practicing speaking and academic writing skills.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Describe active listening, academic effort, and academic success.
  • Brainstorm and organize ideas through outlining (linear) and mind mapping (holistic).
  • Take notes and formulate questions.
  • Identify the main and supporting ideas in a text. 
  • Apply the 4rd person in academic writing.
  • Write a three-paragraph composition using chronological order, spatial order, and order of importance.
  • Give a two-minute impromptu speech.

Requirements to Enroll

To be eligible to enroll in the ELL2101X: Academic Foundation I learners must complete the following:

Access Time

Students will have access to their course learning modules for up to 1 month or 4 weeks from the date of their enrollment.


Certificate of Completion

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) certificate is awarded after the successful completion of six courses (ELL2101X, ELL2102X, ELL2103X, ELL2104X, ELL2105X, and ELL2106X).
