The Level 1 Basic English Certificate is powered by EnGen, a comprehensive language upskilling program that covers essential language skills for beginners. Whether you are a student, a professional, or someone interested in learning English as a second language, the bite sized course modules are for you.

Certificate Duration:
The Level 1 Basic English Certificate is a 3-course certificate consisting of interactive online modules. To earn the Level 1 Basic English Certificate, students must complete the following courses:
- Beginning Literacy
- English for Digital Literacy
- English for School Communication
* Welcome Beginners is a required course but does not count towards the certificate credit.
After 3 courses, you will have access to a variety of learning courses for up to 12 months, including bite sized lessons, group sessions, and assessments. Once your assessment score is “Low Intermediate” or “Intermediate,” you can request registration into the Level 2 Communication for the Workplace Certificate by emailing wespace@nu.edu or calling 805-200-2332
